01French regulation

  • What is the ANJ?

The ANJ is the independent French administrative authority that has regulated the betting sector since 2020, replacing ARJEL. It grants licences to online sports betting operators, monitors their compliance, approves their promotional strategy and can impose sanctions. Its register of licensed operators is public.

  • How do I check that an operator is really licensed?

Three checks are enough. First, consult the register of licensed operators published by the ANJ. Second, confirm that the licence number shown in the operator footer matches the register. Third, look up the licensing decision published in the Journal officiel: it names the holding company, the authorised scope and the covered domain. We provide that last link on every review.

  • How long does a licence remain valid?

An online sports betting licence is granted for five years from its effective date. It is renewable but non-transferable: it cannot be sold or moved to another company. On renewal a new number is issued and the previous one ceases to apply.

  • What do the characters in a licence number mean?

The usual format combines a sequence number assigned to the operator, a scope code (PS for sports betting, PH for horse racing, PO for poker) and the effective date. A suffix may indicate the renewal rank. So 0057-PS-2022-07-07 identifies a sports betting licence taking effect on 7 July 2022.

  • Can I open an account with an operator not licensed in France?

An operator without an ANJ licence is not authorised to offer sports betting to French residents. In practice you then have none of the protections French law provides: no age verification, no segregation of funds, no recourse to the regulator and no mediation. We list licensed operators only.

02Repère and its independence

  • How does Repère make money?

Through commercial links. When a reader opens an operator link from our pages and subsequently registers, we may receive a fee. The mechanism is described in full in our Disclosure page, and it costs you nothing extra.

  • Can an operator pay to improve its rating?

No. Our framework has five criteria weighted identically for every brand, and the detailed scores appear on each review. No payment changes a rating, a ranking or removes a stated concern.

  • How often are your reviews updated?

We revisit every review at least quarterly, and immediately when a licence is renewed, amended or withdrawn, or when a major commercial condition changes. The last editorial update date is displayed on every page.

  • Do you publish betting tips?

Never. Repère publishes no tips, no selections, no staking systems and no promises of return. Our work is limited to documenting and comparing licensed operators.

  • Do you accept reader contributions?

We host no forum, no comment section and no content published directly by third parties. Reports received through the Contact page are read and verified by the editorial team before being taken into account, and are never published as submitted.

03Betting in control and protection

  • What is the minimum age to bet in France?

    18. Identity verification is mandatory at every licensed operator and is a condition for approving withdrawals. Any attempt to register by a minor is illegal and results in account closure.

  • How does self-exclusion work?

You can request registration on the national self-exclusion list free of charge, through the Ministry of the Interior or directly from your account area with a licensed operator. It applies to all licensed operators in France and to the relevant physical venues. It runs for three years and is renewable.

  • What is the ANJ moderation tool?

Every licensed operator must provide a moderation tool allowing you to set deposit and stake limits, review your activity history and suspend your account temporarily. It must be easy to reach from the account area, with no phone call required.

  • Where can I find free help?

Joueurs Info Service offers free, anonymous and confidential support on 09 74 75 13 13, seven days a week, along with a chat service and a moderated forum. It also refers you to specialist consultations near you. The links appear in the footer of every page.

  • Can sports betting be a source of income?

No. Over time, the margin built into the odds guarantees a structurally unfavourable result for the bettor. Treat any stake as leisure spending already gone, and never stake money you need elsewhere.
